Wellcome News 70, spring 2012
The latest Wellcome News is out now, bursting with stories about the people, projects and research that we support. In this issue, we hear from people working in a variety of fields about what motivates them.
Gracing the cover of this issue are the Trust’s first Joint Senior Investigators, Professors Miriam Moffatt and Bill Cookson. We met them at the National Heart and Lung Institute to hear about their long-term research to understand the genetics underlying asthma, as well as the secrets of having an enduring and successful working relationship.
Also talking about their research and careers, Drs Eva Frickel, Steven Pollard and Rhys Roberts discuss their experiences of the Wellcome–Beit Prize Fellowships, which recognise the best researchers to gain Trust intermediate-stage support.
Elsewhere in the issue, we hear about what drives three more people passionate about their work. Dr Samson Kinyanjui explains why he’s working to build research capacity in Kenya and across Africa, Sir Steve Redgrave tells us why he thinks sport can help us all relate to science more, and Dr Matt Parker explores the correlation between comedy and being a nerd.
In January, we announced a new Centre for Mitochondrial Research at Newcastle University. This issue’s ‘Nuts and bolts’ showcases mitochondria, which are essential components of our cells. On a historical note, Wellcome Trust Public Engagement Fellow Dr Richard Barnett discusses the medical and cultural aspects of gin. ‘From the archive’ features letters, memos and photos that give a taste of how devoted Henry Wellcome was to his pet cats.
As ever, there are more features, the latest Wellcome Trust funding and research news, as well as information about upcoming events and exhibitions at Wellcome Collection inside.
You can download the new issue or subscribe to receive future issues for free. As always, we’d love to hear your comments, ideas or suggestions for this or future issues: email us and let us know.
